1 Introduction The productivity of research in the biopharmaceutical industry is decreasing over time (Carter et al. 2016; Masri et al. 2012). While R&D expenditures escalate, the number of drug approvals by government agencies declines, in a context of rising competition, pressure by national health systems to reduce drug prices, and more restrictive regulations about clinical research (Ippoliti, Ramello, and Scherer 2021).
