Known as VE Day, Thursday marks 80 years since the Nazis surrendered, ending World War II in Europe. A Northampton County man was one of the first allied soldiers to infiltrate a highly prized Nazi encampment, just days before the war ended in Europe. Billions of Catholics around the world are focused on Vatican City. Locally, a special mass is being held this morning marking the start of the historic event. As thousands gather in St. Peter's square, locals are gathering at Allentown's Cathedral of Saint Catherine of Siena, for a special Holy Sacrifice mass, to celebrate the Papal Conclave. Catholics around the world are keeping a close eye on the Vatican as they await the announcement of the church's new pope. "A conclave is first and foremost a spiritual moment," Allentown Diocese Bishop Alfred Schlert said in his homily. Catholics in the five-county Allentown Diocese are praying for those 133 cardinals as they go about their secret task of selecting the next pope. The bishop led a special Mass on Wednesday morning at the Cathedral Church of St. Catherine of Siena in Allentown.
