For long-distance runners the opportunity to compete in the prestigious Boston Marathon is a huge feather in their headband. On April 21 there will be 54 invited athletes from New Mexico scheduled to run in this year’s race among 30,000 from around the globe. A major achievement for many next Monday will be to finish the 26.2-mile event after enduring energy-sapping Heartbreak Hill in the latter stages. And for those performing extra well it will be a chest-pounding accomplishment.

The New Mexico Lobos, listed as 500-1 shots to win the 2024-25 NCAA men's basketball title at multiple Las Vegas casinos at midseason, are one of many teams in the NCAA Tournament considered huge underdogs to claim the title. For instance, upon scanning seven sports-betting websites on Vegasinsiders.com Monday, there were 50 schools with odds of 100-1 or longer. Four were at 2,500-1. The New Mexico State High School Basketball Tournament, which commenced with first-round play Friday and Saturday, has grown exponentially since the first official tourney was conducted in 1921. That year the Albuquerque High boys beat Alamogordo 22-20 in the final at the Albuquerque Armory. Some schools that played in that event no longer exist. Dawson is a ghost town; Albuquerque Indian School shut its doors in 1981.

The Philadelphia Eagles, led by rushing champion Saquon Barkley and their top-rated defense, will attempt to keep the Kansas City Chiefs from winning their record-setting third straight Super Bowl when the teams clash in New Orleans' Superdome at 4:30 p.m. MT Sunday. Super Bowl 59 will be a rematch of the championship game two seasons ago when Kansas City rallied from a 10-point second-half deficit behind limping QB Patrick Mahomes (ankle) to edge Philadelphia 38-35.
