The undrafted 6-foot-5, 212-pound forward has played 302 regular-season NHL games and another 59 postseason contests over the past five seasons, two with the Florida Panthers and three more with Dallas after signing a four-year contract with the Stars valued at $4.5 million average annual value in the summer of 2022.

At this spring’s International Ice Hockey Men’s World Championship, the gold medal USA squad lost one game in the preliminary round, falling to Switzerland in a 3-0 shutout. The Americans and Swiss met again in the gold medal game, with USA and Kraken teammates Matty Beniers, Mikey Eyssimont, and Joey Daccord winning gold. But there was no surprise for Axel Alavaara that Switzerland was playing in the gold medal game.

Like pretty much all Canadian kids, Kraken player development consultant Justin Rai played hockey from a young age. What’s different about Rai is that he wielded a hockey stick on and off the ice all four seasons, year in and year out. “I played other sports, but my family and I always laugh because I played every single type of hockey possible,” said Rai on a recent afternoon after summer training sessions with an impressive group of B.C.-based NHLers and Kraken prospects.
