Every summer my family and I spend a week in the Adirondacks. Every time we go I am impressed by how every business and resident goes out of their way to treat visitors like gold. I guess we are gold to them ... a precious commodity because the entire economy within the Adirondacks is based on some form of tourism. They do this because, of course, they love our money but also because they truly love where they live. Now, compare that to what takes place in Niagara County.

Americans everywhere are enjoying this long weekend, an extended respite from the daily grind of work or school. To many, it is a joyous occasion, the unofficial start to summer. That enjoyment of life and the rare chance to relax too often mask the real meaning of the Memorial Day holiday, one that recognizes the men and women who gave their lives so that we — and others around the world — might savor these weekends shared with family and friends.

In the late spring of 2005 I reached out to Tim Marren, editor of the Lockport Union-Sun & Journal at the time, and asked if he needed a columnist. Lockport native and Western New York media icon Clip Smith had passed away 11 months earlier and without his contributions there were no local columnists. I told Tim I would follow in Clip’s shoes and write the column for free. So, here I am 20 years later, still writing for the Lockport paper and its sister publication, the Niagara Gazette.

Last week, during an episode of WNY Tonight, my guest organization was the Lockport Amateur Radio Association. Among LARA’s members joining me in the studio was Ivan Fry, who became a licensed radio operator last year. Everyone who watched the show on Lockport Community Television was captivated by the 10 year-old — his interest and knowledge of the science and technology of communications is exceeded only by the energy and skill with which he speaks.

Going back to the start of the Tea Party movement in 2007, something that has been in and out of the public conversation is the promotion, by some folks of right persuasion (specifically Republicans and neoconservatives), of a constitutional convention (“Con-Con”) in hopes of passing a balanced budget amendment (BBA). The concept of a Con-Con is getting attention again, as a growing number of Republican governors are clamoring for one in hopes of landing the BBA.
