PIAA Playoffs:–The Mars boys lacrosse team defeated Lower Dauphin 12-2 in the First Round of the Class 2A playoff Tuesday. They will meet Allentown Saturday in the state Quarterfinals. –The Mars girls fell 11-10 in overtime to Twin Valley, ending their season. The Seneca Valley boys volleyball season came to a close following a 3-0 loss to Central York in the PIAA First Round. The Seneca Valley baseball team will play Cedar Cliff Thursday in the state Quarterfinals.

The Houston Astros shutout the Pittsburgh Pirates 3-0 last night in the opening game of a three-game series at PNC Park. All three Astros runs came via two home runs. Paul Skenes allowed one run on three hits over eight innings. He struck out eight and lowered his ERA to 2.05. His record fell to 4-6. It was a major league-leading 10th shutout of the Pirates this season. The Pirates managed only four singles in the game.

Butler County Community College freshman golfer Jacob Marquardt is in third place and 3 strokes off the lead after Tuesday’s opening round of the National Junior College Athletic Association Division III men’s national championship in Chautauqua, New York. The Seneca Valley graduate shot a 1-under 71 to begin the four-round tournament at Chautauqua Golf Club’s Lake Course.

The Pittsburgh Pirates open a nine-game home-stand tonight when they host the Houston Astros. First pitch is 6:40pm at PNC Park. Pre-game on WISR begins at 6:15pm. The Astros enter the night a half-game behind Seattle in the American League West. They have a record o 32-27. (The Pirates are 22-38, but 5-5 in their last 10 games.)The Bucs will have three night games with the Astros, then the Philadelphia Phillies arrive for the weekend.

According to a report in today’s Pittsburgh Post-Gazette: Seneca Valley graduate Matt Vogt has earned a spot for the U.S. Open coming to Oakmont next week. He won a 36-hole qualifier for the Open in Walla Walla, Washington Monday by one stroke. Vogt, who used to be a caddie at Oakmont, shot 8-under par to win one of the two qualifying spots. He went from the Raiders to Butler University in Indianapolis to play collegiately.
