It’s still pretty difficult to fully process the 2025 the Mavericks are having. They’ve experienced what is pretty clearly the most damaging moment of self-destruction in franchise history—and then, a few months later (100 days, to be exact), they fell backward into the biggest personnel win the franchise has ever seen. It would be like losing your house to a tornado, only to discover, while rebuilding, a massive ancient buried treasure beneath your property that suddenly makes you absurdly rich.

About four weeks ago – before we all got caught up trying to chase down a Stanley Cup – I hinted at the Cowboys beautiful mystery about their offensive plan. Since then – the next day, to be exact – they targeted and acquired George Pickens to really make the passing game far-more threatening.

When it is going right, we ignore a bunch of bad indicators. For a stretch of time, you can tell yourself that maybe scoring the first goal is not that important because you keep winning the games. You might tell yourself that your penalty kill can hold up, too. So, maybe those offensive zone penalties are not the killers that you claim them to be. You see how poorly things are going on the road, but also know that you have won big road games in the past, so therefore, it is in there somewhere.

The Stars are now in a critical spot. They are not dead, so let’s not get it twisted. But, let’s also not lose sight of the reality. The reality is that they must win the next game or they will be put in a ridiculously tough spot where they will be down badly and they will be down to their last strike. They aren’t there yet, but they are headed that way in a hurry.

(presented without an editor, so I am sure there might be a grammatical issue or two.)Before we dive too deep into last night’s kick in the groin, a reminder about how the playoffs actually work. You can win the Stanley Cup despite losing 12 playoff games. Heck, you can win the Stanley Cup without ever winning consecutive games in a series. You can have a parade and only play hockey at a level that wins 57% of your playoff games. So, nights like last night are not fatal blows.

We truly live in an amazing sports city, so I know that having the freedom to write about “whatever I want” during a given stretch of time puts us all in an interesting spot. For instance, tonight marks the start of the Stars' run in the Western Conference Final, and there’s truly no sporting event that will have more of my attention. But my preview with Sean Shapiro was published yesterday, and I could have just let that ride.

For the third straight year the Dallas Stars are in the Western Conference Final. It’s one of the most impressive runs in the league right now, only topped by what the Florida Panthers have done going to the past three Conference Finals out East and winning the whole thing last June. It’s the same opponent as 2024, the Edmonton Oilers, and it’s a chance at revenge for the Stars, who have been on the wrong side of this handshake each of the past two seasons.

Stars-Oilers, again. One of the great things about rematches, especially at this stage, how they evolve and teach us more about the respective teams. It’s how rivalries are born and when we look at long-term trajectory in the Western Conference, and the playoff format, it feels like this is a matchup that will inevitably happen again in the future, too.

There was a moment on Sunday at the PGA Championship when it looked like we might have a real back-nine treat waiting for us. It was just a fleeting moment, but it did happen. Jon Rahm had birdied 8, 10, and 11 and had worked his way to the top of the leaderboard at -9, into a tie with Scottie Scheffler. Scheffler had scuffled along on the front nine, and after a bogey on the 9th, he had given two back and had dropped to -9 himself.
