Steel executives lobbied for tariffs to keep low-priced imports from infiltrating the U.S. market. President Trump’s duties on a wide assortment of imports could cool steel demand. Despite imported steel being excluded from reciprocal tariffs Trump announced Wednesday, shares in Nucor, Steel Dynamics, Cleveland-Cliffs and U.S. Steel received the same drubbing as the rest of the market on Thursday and Friday.

Trump last month increased and expanded the tariffs on imported steel and aluminum that he began in 2018. The 25% tariff now covers hundreds of finished products made with imported steel and aluminum.
