A few weeks ago, we narrowly avoided a family tragedy. My niece and the other five members of her household β including a 10-month-old baby β were rushed to the hospital with carbon monoxide poisoning. Her home had CO detectors, which were in the house when she bought it, but they apparently were faulty. She now realizes she should have replaced all the CO and smoke detectors when they moved in.

Every few years, I get a notice from my insurance company informing me that β usually unbeknownst to me β an inspector has strolled around my property looking for potential hazards or issues of concern to my insurer. The notice will sometimes include a list of things they want me to address, perhaps like a tree branch thatβs too close to the roof.
