After nearly a decade, sadly, but to the delight of some I’m sure, this is my last column for the Daily Voice. And it is a bittersweet farewell, as this page is a weekly labour-of-love that always tests both my creativity and my critical thinking abilities.

Bobby Brown | September 24, 2024“If you can’t say anything nice, then keep quiet.”This was one of the mottos that my mother used to live by. It was her view that you could angrily shoot your mouth off about something or someone, highlighting all the negatives, or you could say nothing. Saying nothing harms nobody, whereas talking badly about someone, harms their reputation, and also calls your own integrity into question.

The reckoning should be celebrated with even greater excitement when it comes to those suspected of looting the public purse. Last week we had two such stories to make a song and dance about. The one was the highest court in the land ruling against the former head of the SABC Hlaudi Motsoeneng.

I hope there are enough examples of why you need to be very careful about what you say and do online. One of the many problems with social media is that it lulls users into a false sense of safety. It’s given many people the impression that they can say and do as they please, without any consequences.

Bobby Brown | September 16, 2024I worry every time we lose another one of our moral giants. This was the case again when Pravin Gordhan died recently, at the age of 75. There has been much said and written about him since then. And rightfully so, since he has been a staple of government news since the advent of our democracy. For the most part, much of what we read and heard about him, seemed to be him trying to do what was best for the country.
