We are all still in shock from what we witnessed on stage 20 of this year's Giro d'Italia. Despite our attempts to break it down and analyze the myriad of circumstances that contributed to one of the most unique, baffling, and inspiring races we've ever seen, we must remember that no amount of anticipation or prediction can prepare us for what truly happens in a race.

This year's Giro is a reminder of how great this race can be. My first memory of the Giro d'Italia dates back to 1988 when Andy Hampsten became the first and only American to win the race overall. This was well before the internet or live streaming, so I followed the race by reading the results in the sports page of the Rocky Mountain News as often as I could. Growing up in Colorado, and with Andy having ties to the state at that time, it was a big deal.

With the USA Cycling National Championship happening right now in Charleston, West Virginia, I am reminded of how special it is to become a national champion in any category. Wearing the stars and stripes jersey is a huge honor and a reward for all the hard work and sacrifice it takes to be the best. Perhaps the best part of becoming a national champion is sharing that special moment with the people who helped you get there.

When Uno-X Mobility changed their normal kit in for the iconic 7-Eleven kit for Liège-Bastogne-Liège this year, I went into my attic to find my 7-Eleven Junior Development jersey from 1988 to wear to a watch party at my buddy's house. While up there, I found a rack of old jerseys I have kept from my career and wanted to share them with all of you. These are parachutes compared to the skin-tight jerseys riders use these days, but I'm very happy that I kept them.

From the junior ranks through a lengthy pro career, bike racing has been a passion of mine for most of my life, and I continue to watch as many races as possible on TV. But there is nothing like watching a bike race in person! The Greenville Cycling Classic, which kicked off the Speed Week series (with all races being streamed live on Velo!) last week, gave me the opportunity to experience live racing again in my adopted hometown of Greenville, South Carolina, and I had a blast.
