Co-writer/director Leon Lee and co-writer Michael Fine have made a timely thriller in Mind Wave. Things kick off when Clint (Harry Han), a Chinese ex-pat living in Canada, is arrested for allegedly hacking into the Chinese government’s “great firewall.“ He maintains his innocence and tells his story to the investigating officer, Inspector Roberts (Steve Thackray). Clint was forced to flee China when government officials wanted him arrested for supposedly illegal activity.

Take My Breath is writer-director Nada Mezni Hafaiedh’s third feature film. It follows Shams (Amina Ben Ismail), a seamstress who lives in a small fishing community. There, she’s harassed by the married Abdelkhalik (Aymen Ben Hmida), who is obsessed with her. His wife, Namia (Sana Ben Cheikh Larbi), is a customer of Shams and is also taken by the woman. However, it is the fisherman Habib (Mohammed Mrad) who has stolen the 23-year-old woman’s heart.

While not frequently used, snuff films have been a presence in cinema for a great while. Of course, no production can reach the heartwrenching depths of 8MM (which remains Schumacher’s best), but that does not mean no one should. Written by Mike Gerbino and directed by John Balazs, Freelance is a thriller set in Australia about snuff films. Does the country that produced the beautiful One Perfect Day strike gold again?

I’ll Be There, directed by Andrew Shea and written by Cindy McCreery, begins during a birthday party. A child is being forced to leave by his dad, causing the birthday girl to cry. So, the slightly older kid decides to stay, causing the father to lose his s**t. The other adults intervene, and the hot-tempered, abusive man drives away in a huff. In order to save the day, good dad Clint (Dorien Wilson) buys tickets to a Michael Jackson concert from a scalper.

Anna Cooley directs Kirsten Lankester’s screenplay for Faultline. The dramatic thriller stars Stacie Harrison as Paige and Lankester as her sister Jessie. Paige fled her Canadian hometown 20 years ago after her mom’s death. This left Jessie behind to pick up the pieces. However, fate conspires for Pagie, who’s now a corporate lawyer, to come home. See, her company is set to merge with another whose base of operations is her old stomping yards.

The victory does little to quell his wife’s anxiety over his career of choice. However, said spouse, Ernesta (Gelmine Glemzaite), does support her husband despite her reservations. After Lukas cleans up and changes, he, Ernesta, and their son Kristupas (Herkus Scrapas) meet up with the in-laws.

From Go and The Way Of The Gun to True Romance and Gone Girl, the filmmakers draw from truly excellent sources. Are they able to rearrange the familiar elements into something fresh or new? Emma (Alice Lee) is meeting her ex, Dale (Ryan Dance), for lunch. She does this to affirm why she broke up with him, while Dale hopes to plead his case for getting back together.

Ravens is written and directed by Mark Gill. The movie is so confident and stylish that it is amazing to learn it is only the director’s second feature-length title. Gill is a natural filmmaker, and if his future projects are even as half as good as this darkly fantastical biography, then he will only ever make motion pictures that astound. But before diving into why this is so good, let’s establish context via a plot synopsis.

Screenwriter Jean S. Monpère and co-writer/director Brandon Tamburri both make their feature-length debut with Plan B. The comedy begins when Piper (Jamie Lee) is thrown out of a club for excessive drunkenness. As she wanders the hall to her apartment, Piper runs into her nerdy neighbor across the hall, Evan (Jon Heder). Her inebriated state makes Piper frisky, so she invites Evan in for a one-night stand. He instantly agrees as Evan has been crushing on Piper since they first met.
Let’s Start A Cult

The first five or so minutes of Let’s Start A Cult, directed by Ben Kitnick, give off strong Love Flower vibes. That film is populated solely by the worst people, so much so that I actively questioned why anyone would want to spend time with them (don’t worry, the filmmakers loved it so much they put it into the trailer; seriously). But co-writers Kitnick, Wes Haney, and Stavros Halkias wisely play up the lead’s obnoxiousness to make salient points about humans’ need for connection.
