    Cape Breton Liberal MLA’s Fred Tilley and Derek Mombourquette are calling on the Progressive-Conservative government to step in to make sure the Cape Breton Miners Museum can remain open. The Museum’s executive director Mary Pat Mombourquette says they aren’t making enough money to pay for expenses. She says provincial funding hasn’t increased to meet the demand.

    Today is the deadline for candidates for mayor and council in the CBRM to file their nomination papers. Nominations can be filed with the Returning Officer at City Hall in Sydney until 5:00 this evening. Candidates have until 4:00 tomorrow afternoon to withdraw from the race. Election day is Saturday, October 19th.

    Deputy Mayor and candidate for mayor James Edwards says he’ll set up a committee to find funding to make sure the Cape Breton Miner’s Museum doesn’t close if he’s elected mayor. Edwards says the mandate of the committee will be to secure permanent funding for the museum from all levels of government and the private sector. He says funding for the establishment of the committee would be available from the CBRM with advice from municipal staff.

    The Department of Community Services says it’s working with service providers and partners to make sure people experiencing homelessness have access to more support during the rainy weather in the forecast for tonight and tomorrow. It says the Cape Breton Community Housing Association Shelter at 106 Townsend Street in Sydney is open 24/7 with the ability to expand, pending weather conditions. It says the Ally Centre at 75 Prince Street in Sydney is also open 24/7.

    Stats Canada says Cape Breton’s unemployment rate was 9.2 percent in August. The compares with an unemployment rate of 8 percent in July and 10.2 percent in August of last year. Meanwhile, the national employment rate increased to 6.6 percent, last month. That’s up from 6.4 percent in July. Nova Scotia’s jobless rate in August was 6.9%, up from 6.4% in July.
