The Mpumalanga Economic Regulator (MER) has called on residents to avoid reckless behaviour that might result in long-lasting harm. MER CEO Vusi Mtsweni raised concerns about the dangers of excessive alcohol consumption and irresponsible gambling, especially during Easter festivities. He said South Africa remains one of the top alcohol-consuming countries in the world, and the substance is linked to 75% of homicides, 60% of traffic accidents, and almost half of unnatural deaths.

ActionSA leader Herman Mashaba has raised concerns about the government’s R3.45-billion expenditure in the 2023/24 financial year on foreign missions. Mashaba said the country is wasting billions of rands while basic services at home remain underfunded. This was used to maintain 115 embassies, high commissions, and consulates around the world. The figures come from a reply to a parliamentary question asked by ActionSA.

Minister of Public Works and Infrastructure, Dean Macpherson, has hit back at a court bid challenging his recent appointments to the board of the Independent Development Trust (IDT). Two organisations, Black Forum South Africa and Izwi Labantu Forum, have launched legal proceedings to overturn the appointments of five trustees selected by Macpherson to fill existing vacancies. The newly appointed trustees will serve until July 4 2025.

Minister of Health Aaron Motsoaledi has announced that R1.78-billion has been set aside for the employment of medical professionals across South Africa. The opening of 1 200 doctor posts follows growing concerns about the number of unemployed medical professionals in the country. Last year, hundreds of Eastern Cape doctors vowed to picket outside Premier Oscar Mabuyane’s office until their demands are met.
