    The University of Mpumalanga (UMP) has conferred its first Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degree since its inception 12 years ago to Dr Khumbelo Mabadahanye (30). The determined scholar, originally from Tshikweta in Venda, received her PhD in environmental science at the official 2025 graduation ceremony at the UMP’s Mbombela Campus on May 8.

    The Mpumalanga Provincial Government’s Executive Council (Exco) has appointed Dr Nontobeko Mahlalela as the first-ever CEO of the Nkomazi Special Economic Zone (SEZ). Mahlalela was appointed during a meeting of the Exco on May 5. In a media statement, the Exco announced that Mahlalela is credited as an expert in local economic development and widely experienced in local government.

    The Ehlanzeni TVET College and the Mpumalanga Provincial Legislature (MPL) have formed a strategic partnership dedicated to enhancing education, skills development and community upliftment in the district. The principal of the college that houses seven campuses, Elias Mbuyane, and the secretary of the MPL, Hubert Shabangu, signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) on May 7.

    The Mpumalanga police said the search for the three-year-old Aqhama Mconywa in the Crocodile River in Schagen is still ongoing. The Ehlanzeni Police Diving Unit have been scouring the river from Schagen since the evening of April 13. Despite challenges, such as not being able to dive into the river due to an overpopulation of crocodiles and hippos, the unit has searched up to Mataffin looking for the little girl.

    The South African journalism community is in shock following the discovery of human remains, believed to be those of journalist, Sibusiso Aserie Ndlovu and his partner, Zodwa Precious Mdhluli. The bitter breakthrough was made when leads sent the police to the Rapotokwane CCZ Farm (on the D2774 road in Rust de Winter) in Limpopo on May 8. The bodies were found in an advanced stage of decomposition and DNA tests are being conducted to confirm their identity.
