Despite losing in the semi-finals, the Mbombela Senior Citizens Football Club, dubbed the Mbombela Gogos, showcased some football skills at the 2025 Grannies International Football Tournament. This team reached the semi-finals of the tourney held at Nkowankowa Stadium in Tzaneen in Limpopo from April 3 to 5. They played against the grannies from France, called the Le Zamies Foot, on April 4 and led the first half with three goals to two.

The University of Mpumalanga’s (UMP) council has appointed a new vice chancellor, Prof Thenjiwe Meyiwa. She takes the baton from the outgoing Prof Thoko Mayekiso and will commence her duties on October 1. The appointment emanates from a council meeting on March 27. According to the chairperson, Sabelo Mahlalela, Meyiwa brings a wealth of experience and expertise to the role.

The N4 between Mjejane and Jeppes Reef intersections was closed since midday on Monday, March 24. This was due to a service delivery protest action by community members which is still continuing. However, the road is now open for traffic. The protesters blockaded the road with rocks and burning tyres. ALSO READ: Big news for big mindsThe police are on the scene to monitor the situation. A traffic jam was reported on both directions of the road.

A vintage Mercedes-Benz limousine caught fire on Nahemi Road in White River earlier this afternoon, March 23. The owner, Shaun McBride, said his partner was driving the car without any passengers. “She was going to get some things from the shop and the transmission area caught fire. She tried to apply the brakes, but they didn’t work. I don’t know if the fire had already spread to the wires. The car reversed and as she tried to control it, it overturned as it’s a long car,” he explained.

A Lowvelder, model and philanthropist, Candice Williams, was crowned Mrs Universe South Africa 2025. The crowning took place in Sandton on Saturday, March 22. Williams is the former Mrs Mpumalanga Lowveld 2023. She is also the co-founder of the Rehab Beauty Foundation, a brand ambassador, a wife and a mum. She will be representing the country in the 48th Mrs Universe in the Philippines from October 1 to 9. Proud Lowvelders have flooded social media with congratulatory messages.

Two law enforcers allegedly attached to the City of Mbombela and a former SANDF member have been arrested for the attempted murder of a woman in Mjejane on Friday, March 21. According to a Mpumalanga police spokesperson, Lieutenant Colonel Jabu Ndubane, a 45-year-old woman was approached and her house vandalised by about nine people with pangas, rocks and other objects. “The woman recognised the two law enforcers from their work at the City of Mbombela.
