    A 14-year-old Bradford County girl killed two weeks ago died of a shotgun wound to the chest, the county coroner’s office announced. Coroner James Bowen ruled the death of Destiny Skye Gross, of Towanda, a homicide, but did not label it as criminal or otherwise in his news release. State police have not announced any arrests. Homicide means a victim died because of someone else’s actions but does not necessarily mean a crime was committed. Police have said no threat to the public exists.

    Lackawanna County plans to post forms on its website Friday so home, business and farm owners can appeal the new assessed values of their properties. County assessment director Patrick Tobin said real-estate owners will have until Aug. 1 to appeal values calculated during the county’s first reassessment in more than 50 years. The first appeal hearings will begin Aug. 4, and appeals should be completed by Oct. 31, Halloween, Tobin said.

    UGI Utilities Inc. must pay the state a $750,000 penalty to settle a case rooted in a Christmas 2020 natural gas eruption that flipped a moving SUV and killed a passenger in Monroe County. The state Public Utility Commission voted 5-0 to approve the settlement between UGI and the commission’s Bureau of Investigation and Enforcement at its meeting Wednesday. The bureau originally sought a $1.6 million penalty.

    Entering the season, Valley View High School softball coach Mia Wascura had high hopes. In her second year as coach, Wascura thought her girls could bring home a state title. On Thursday, hopes happened. Valley View won the PIAA Class 4A Girls Softball state championship by beating Kennard-Dale High School 6-0 and earned one of the six annual state softball titles. “Six high schools out of over almost ... 700 get to hold that gold (each year), you know? That's incredible,” Wascura said Friday.
