Former U.S. Rep. Matt Cartwright announced he will not seek re-election Thursday. His decision sets off a search for a suitable Democrat who can defeat Republican Rep. Rob Bresnahan next year. During a press conference at Greenwood Hose Company in Moosic Thursday morning, Cartwright confirmed he will not run for Congress again. He did not endorse another Democrat. WVIA News learned on Wednesday Cartwright decided against running again from two sources familiar with his decision.

The owners of a popular Honesdale restaurant pushed back Friday against suggestions they employed undocumented immigrants arrested by federal agents a day earlier. In a Facebook post, Sam and ToniAnn Skiriotis, who operate Elegante Restaurant and Pizzeria, acknowledged U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement agents detained three employees.

Wilkes University’s former baseball coach says the school fired him two years ago because he reported a white player for making “offensive racial comments” toward a Black player. In a federal lawsuit filed Friday, Kevin Gryboski, a star baseball player at Wilkes who played Major League Baseball, contends the school violated his civil rights by firing him without a good reason on May 25, 2023. Efforts to obtain comment from Wilkes general counsel Elizabeth Leo were not immediately successful.

The state Public Utility Commission will investigate three northcentral Pennsylvania utilities’ requests to increase electricity or natural gas rates before deciding whether to approve them. The requests would raise basic monthly bills by 11% to 18.4% for more than 21,000 utility customers in Bradford, Northumberland, Tioga and Union counties. The commission suspended the requests by Wellsboro Electric Co., Valley Energy Inc. and Citizens’ Electric Co. during a meeting Thursday.
