Lackawanna County plans to borrow more than $29 million to pave roads, fix or replace bridges and pay off earlier borrowing without another property tax hike. County chief financial officer David Bulzoni outlined the proposed borrowing during a Board of Commissioners meeting Wednesday. To raise the money, Bulzoni said the county would sell bonds that would be paid back over 25 years. The commissioners introduced an ordinance to issue the bonds. They plan to vote on it next Wednesday.

Moosic officials want a councilwoman to resign amid charges she embezzled $41,000 by padding her sick time while she was borough administrator. Jane Sterling, 65, charged with crimes Thursday, had not resigned either as a councilwoman or borough planning commission member as of Monday afternoon, Mayor Bob Bennie said. The borough asked for her resignations from both in a statement issued Friday. Bennie declined further comment, except to refer to the statement.

Lackawanna County Commissioner Matt McGloin resigned six weeks ago but replacing him has produced a court fight that is pitting Democrats against Democrats. On one side: Democratic Commissioner Bill Gaughan, 38, a former Scranton City Council president with no apparent fear of disagreeing bluntly with anyone, including more senior local Democrats. Gaughan even thinks the county judges who will pick his next colleague should do it differently than they intended.

Two Republican congressmen who represent Northeast and Northcentral Pennsylvania said Thursday they at least partially support President Donald Trump’s tariffs. U.S. Rep. Rob Bresnahan, who represents the 8th Congressional District, offered a less sweeping endorsement than Rep. Dan Meuser, who represents the 9th district. Without embracing Trump’s list of tariffs entirely, Bresnahan said he’s supportive of tariffs aimed at reciprocity — targeting countries that tax imported American goods.
