The annual Trojan Parade For Cancer raised $51,000 for the North Bay Regional Health Centre Foundation. Hundreds of students and staff from West Ferris Secondary School marched down to the waterfront on Tuesday for the announcement, games, and more. Funds raised this year are helping purchase a state-of-the-art contrast injector for mammography, to help detect and diagnose breast cancer earlier. This was the 30th annual Parade for Cancer.

Paramedics in our area responded to over 19,000 ambulance emergency 911 calls last year. That from the District of Nipissing Social Services Administration Board (DNSSAB) as it celebrates Paramedic Services Week (May 18-24). Officials also handed out the inaugural Perseverance Awards honouring paramedics who have served between 5 and 35 years.

The local Tim Hortons smile cookie campaign raised over $99,000 for the North Bay and District Humane Society. Officials say the money raised will help vulnerable companion animals with vet care, medicine, adoptions, and more. This is the second year the Humane Society has participated in the Smile Cookie campaign. “Our community really rallied around us this year,” says Liam Cullin, Executive Director for the North Bay Humane Society.

Upgrades on a section of Premier Road are underway. Construction, which includes the installation of new sidewalks, is happening from Fowler St. to Champlain Park. The city says the contractor will begin pulverizing the existing roadway this week, adding the current pavement will be grinded down and repurposed to form the base of the new sidewalks. The work, which also includes the installation of storm drainage ditches and more, is tentatively scheduled to wrap up in late October.
