This June, the Alliance of Area Business Publishers will have its conference in Ottawa, Canada. The statewide unemployment rate in Massachusetts rose slightly to 4.3% in December, above the national rate of 4.1% and where the Massachusetts rate was a year ago. February’s statewide rate is up from the 4.2% unemployment rate in January and the 3.8% from February 2024, according to a press release issued Friday by the Massachusetts Executive Office of Labor and Workforce Development, citing U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics data.

The investor group Conifer Life Sciences has opened at the Worcester incubator Massachusetts Biomedical Initiatives, joining a growing number of organizations seeking to provide funding for startups and early stage companies in Central Massachusetts. Conifer is the first investor group to locate at MBI’s current location on Briden Street and the second in its 40-year history, according to a Thursday press release from MBI.

Connecticut-based telecommunications provider Charter Communications will close its Worcester call center on June 26, as the company is reducing its overall headcount in Central Massachusetts significantly. “We have elected to transition this work to our other U.S.-based Call centers, where we can deliver information, training, and technology to our representatives more efficiently,” Heidi Vandenbrouck, Charter’s regional director of communications, wrote in an email to WBJ.
