The Miami Heat earned a playoff-clinching win in Atlanta on Friday, but lost its own first-round pick for this year’s NBA Draft on the same night. That’s because the Heat owed a 2025 lottery-protected first-round selection to the Oklahoma City Thunder — a pick first sent out by Miami in the 2019 trade to acquire Jimmy Butler.

Kansas City Royals reliever Lucas Erceg exited Friday’s game against the Detroit Tigers after being hit on the foot by a line drive. Erceg faced Tigers star Riley Greene in the seventh inning. Greene hit the baseball back up the middle that clipped Erceg’s foot. Erceg immediately went down in pain and had trouble regaining his balance. The line drive had a 109.1 mph exit velocity off the bat. Riley Greene smoked a 109 mph single off of Lucas Erceg’s ankle.

There are no guarantees to a successful rebuild in the NBA. Among the myriad dangers of tanking to accelerate a rebuild is this: It may not work. It usually doesn’t work -- at least in producing championship-level teams. For every Oklahoma City or Cleveland, which have turned around their fortunes, there are a half-dozen cautionary tales. Supposed franchise players taken at the top of drafts cannot stay healthy, trades don’t pan out and free agents don’t live up to their contracts.
