(1). I grew up believing that our federal government was a system of checks and balances. Three equal branches of government, each with safeguards firmly in place. Separation of powers. A federalist system to provide autonomy to states backed by the 10th Amendment. Measures upon measures put in place by the founding fathers to protect against absolute power. It’s why we left England in the first place. (2). I was wrong. (3). We don’t have a system of checks and balances. We have a system of norms.

It seems very possible that the next round of indictments in the Adams administration will revolve around contracts, RFPs and kickbacks. Whether it’s emergency contracts around the migrant crisis or just run of the mill procurement, this is an issue voters understand. Everyone chooses someone to do something at some point that costs money — drive you somewhere, paint your house, watch your kids. And no one wants to pay money they don’t need to.

A death count in triple digits and rising. Given that, it’s safe to assume that the last thing that’s on their mind is voting a month from now in the election. But that doesn’t mean they should lose their right to vote either. Each year, 1.2 million Americans are displaced due to natural disasters, and severe weather is only getting worse.
