    Sports has been my passion for as long as I can remember. My parents told me I learned math by looking at the baseball standings in the paper. I’d rattle off stats to anyone I knew and had more baseball cards than anyone needed. I have rooted for the Cleveland pro teams since childhood. Ohio State became my college team during the Jimmy Jackson and Joey Galloway eras. There have been great memories but also more heartbreak, especially thanks to Michael Jordan and John Elway, than any fan should know.

    COLUMBUS — Maysville junior Bella Van Wey responded in the shot put after a disappointing effort in the discus on June 7. Van Wey placed fourth in the Division II girls shot put by breaking her own school record with a throw of 41-11 1/2. It came one day after finishing 16th in the girls discus (112-5). The top eight placers in each event earned All-Ohio honors. "I had a mental block (in the discus), so I came into today, relaxed and wanting to have fun," Van Wey said.

    COLUMBUS — A disappointing performance at last year's state track meet motivated Zoey Caldwell throughout this season. More: Bobcats' Caldwell focused on redemption in state meet returnThe senior found redemption on June 7, winning the 100-meter hurdles in a time of :14.28 in the Division II State Track and Field Championships at Ohio State's Jesse Owens Stadium. Caldwell, who will run for Ohio University next season, had set a regional record of :14.30 entering this year's state meet.

    COLUMBUS — A hamstring injury on his jumping leg nearly derailed Aidan Mahon's postseason aspirations. After the Philo junior missed the Muskingum Valley League meet, he recovered enough to win district and regional titles on his way to Columbus. Mahon etched his name in the Philo record books on June 7, becoming the school's first state champion after clearing a personal-best of 6-foot-6 to capture the gold in the Division II boys high jump at Ohio State's Jesse Owens Stadium.
