A growing number of Danish shoppers are crossing the borders to buy groceries, according to the latest study from Norstat. An estimated 64% of Danes shopped in Germany in the past year, up from 58% the previous year, while 36% travelled to Sweden for groceries. Based on these figures, the Association of Danish Retailers (DSK) estimates that this cross-border trade in groceries alone costs Danish retailers over DKK 9 billion (€1.2 billion) in 2024.

The European Commission has decided to initiate infringement procedures against Hungary, concerning unfair price margin restrictions imposed on non-Hungarian companies selling food and non-food items. Spanish households increased their average spending on food and seasonal products during the summer months by 9.5% in 2024, reaching €384.6 per month. Eroski’s Summer Consumer Habits Study, based on internal data, revealed both an increase in units purchased (up 10.8%) and in the number of purchases (up 9.1%) per customer in this period. Out of the total spending in June, July, and August, shoppers in Spain spent 18% on classic summer items like soft drinks, beer, ice cream, and sunscreen.
