Audre Lorde—first of her name, breaker of limitations, guardian of complexity. She's a Black lesbian feminist icon. It's hard to talk about intersectionality and radical love without mentioning or hearing about Lorde. When the Civil Rights Movement was being dominated by Black men and the feminist movement was becoming a pedestal for white women, Lorde had the audacity to be Black, queer, woman and unapologetic.

Over the past year and half, I have received dozens and dozens of text messages from private developers inquiring about the land my grandparents owned before their deaths. Most of the messages begin the same way: a quick greeting followed by some variation of “Did you know you own a vacant lot? We have a proposal to take it off your hands!” I normally respond with a swift “no,” but on one or two occasions I entertain the anonymous and hopeful purchasers by asking how much they’re offering.

In a speech at the American Black Film Festival Honors recently, Aunjanue Ellis-Taylor so eloquently and passionately declared, “I don’t want a seat or a table. I want the structure. I want the land that the structure is on.” Ellis-Taylor’s message came right on time. Donald Trump has only been in office for a little over a month and he has already slashed public funding and intimidated private leaders into submission with his racist and sexist vision for America.
