CUMBERLAND – To be finished at another time. The last two Division I baseball teams to win the state title competed to a 4-4 tie after a 10-inning battle that lasted three-plus hours and saw hometown Cumberland and Bishop Hendricken exit Bentley Field with very few visible traces of daylight showing by the time the clock read 7:15 p.m. on Monday.

Setting the table, Witherspoon coached Edwards during the 2022-23 season at Kansas-based Dodge City Community College. That year, Edwards averaged just under 22 points per game and shot at a high clip from the field (47 percent) and from three-point range (41 percent).

PROVIDENCE – High school baseball isn’t meant to be played when the temperature is in the low 40s and the wind is whipping so hard that players like Pawtucket senior Claudio Martinez find it necessary to make an unorthodox fashion statement by wearing a ski mask. “It’s difficult. I’m from the Dominican [Republic],” said Martinez after Pawtucket improved to 2-0 on the young season following Tuesday’s 9-4 win over Hope in Division III action.
