Brisbane bus drivers braved wild conditions to deliver 700 services on Sunday morning before being recalled about 11am but the southeast’s trains and ferries are still offline. Buses would now run across the southeast on a limited capacity from Monday. No buses would run on the Gold Coast. School buses would also operate for schools which reopened on Monday.

    Brisbane’s most iconic landmarks including the Queen St Mall and South Bank were almost empty this morning as TC Alfred turned the CBD and surrounds into a ghost town. Only the bravest and most bored tourists — and some locals already suffering from cabin fever — were out in the city centre after everyone else heeded electronic road signs warning residents to stay home. Those few stores and cafes which took a gamble and stayed open did a reasonable trade.

    A second deluge is set to pound the state’s drenched far north on Monday and Tuesday, with major flood warnings for half a dozen rivers as the government pleads with people to be patient and buy only what they need. The crisis shifted to the state’s west and the Gulf of Carpentaria on Sunday with record or near-record rain in towns such as Halifax, north of Ingham, which was hit with 270mm.
