Bryant Mayor Chris Treat opened the first meeting of the Municipal Funding Committee on Thursday night by saying the issues to be addressed by the group are “the key issues for setting this city up for the future. This is not an exaggeration or hyperbole.” He went on to say that “in 2035 or 2040, we don’t want to wish we made better decisions ten years ago. If we get these three things right (stormwater utility, street funding, police and fire pensions), it will be a big step for the future.

One of the oldest companies in Waterloo Region intends to merge with another insurer. Gore Mutual Insurance Company, headquartered in Cambridge overlooking Soper Park, intends to merge with Beneva, the companies announced Tuesday. The merger, under the Beneva brand, would make Beneva the 10th largest property and casualty insurer in Canada, a release said.
Sales nudge up for Waterloo Region homes as interest rates retreat

The number of homes sold in Waterloo Region in July climbed slightly year-over-year, a sign that interest rate cuts could be starting to influence buyers. New data from the Cornerstone Association of Realtors shows that 639 homes were sold last month in Waterloo Region via the association’s Multiple Listing Service (MLS) system. That’s up 4.6 per cent compared to July 2023, but down 16.6 per cent compared to the previous 10-year average for July.

There’s more choice for prospective homebuyers in Waterloo Region as the number of new listings climbed last month. New statistics from the Waterloo Region Association of Realtors show there were 1,443 new listings added to the local Multiple Listing Service system in April, up more than 65 per cent year-over-year and 15.5 per cent above the previous 10-year average for the month.

Two very different types of developments received planning committee approval in Kitchener this week. One proposal would see four residential towers, ranging in height from 12 to 24 storeys, built at the corner of Huron and Strasburg roads in south Kitchener. The development would include 760 apartments, a standalone amenity building, and the potential for future commercial buildings along Huron Road.
