on June 18, 2024 at 12:07 pm McDonald’s made the bold move to acquire a voice technology startup with the promise of automating order-taking at its quick service restaurant (QSR) drive-thrus. Apprente was founded in 2017 and surprised the market when it sold to McDonald’s in 2019. Those events were followed by voice technology being incorporated into McD Labs, followed by the sale of the technology to IBM two years later.

X.ai announced a new multimodal large language model (LLM) yesterday, Grok-1.5V. The “V” stands for vision. Grok-1.5V can interpret both text and images. The new model arrived the same week OpenAI’s GPT-4-turbo-vision model was released for general availability. Grok-1.5V, our first-generation multimodal model. In addition to its strong text capabilities, Grok can now process a wide variety of visual information, including documents, diagrams, charts, screenshots, and photographs.

An SEC filing in December 2023 indicated X.ai had raised $135 million of a planned funding round of up to $1 billion. There was no reported valuation for that initial funding round. The Wall Street Journal reported yesterday that early investors in SpaceX and Tesla are considering investment in a new $3 billion funding round that values the company at around $18 billion.

on February 26, 2024 at 12:25 pm Abridge announced a new $150 million funding round led by Lightspeed Venture Partners. The new funding arrived just three months after the company closed its $30 million Series B led by Spark Capital. It is unusual for a company to have such large funding rounds over such a short period of time.
