TUCSON — It was sunrise, more or less, and I was walking the big dog in a neighborhood near my home. The neighborhood is middle-class but spotty, with the patches of five or six nicely kept homes melding into patches of three or four homes in need of loving care. It was trash day, and a black man in his 40s was going through a recycling bin in front of a house, collecting bottles, cans, and more. A white woman in her 50s or 60s came walking across the street with something in her arms.

They do it in Hungary, Turkey, Belarus, Russia and various other countries, so why can’t our leader enrich himself, his family and his friends while in office? He wouldn’t be the first, would he? We remember what Biden’s son and brother did while Biden was in office. There have been others, too. How did Dubya’s daughter get that lucrative “Today” show gig, after all? The great thing about Trump is he’s so open about it. He’s hiding nothing from the American people.

We figured out early on that there was no compromise with him. There was no backing down. It was his way or the highway, Jack. Bobby didn’t care that he weighed, fully grown, around 13 pounds. He didn’t care that the next smallest being in the house weighed five times what he did. He knew he was in charge, and if you crossed him, you were going to hear about. Bobby hasn’t changed a bit in his now 15 years with us, not in the way he acts and not in the way he looks.

“I wish I’d stopped with one,” my mother said as she drove and kept her eyes on the road. She was taking me to a basketball camp about an hour and a half from home. It was a Saturday morning, and she liked to sleep all day on Saturdays and Sundays after working weekdays as an elementary school teacher. I was 14 and had saved money from part-time jobs to pay for the weeklong camp.

You see a shirt online that appeals to you, so you buy it. The shirt arrives a few days later, you try it on, and the first thing you notice is it’s itchy. It also doesn’t fit quite right. And the brilliant orange color you saw online, well, it’s a much duller version of that shirt. But you paid for the shirt, and it’s too late to return it, so you wear it anyway, at least once or twice. A friend recommends a restaurant, so you decide to check it out. You drive to the place, and it’s in a seedy area.

And now Trump wants to cut all federal funding for Special Olympics. As I said, just plain meanness.

The everyday meanness of Trump bothers me. This week alone he again went after Puerto Rico and the ACA, with plain meanness as a main motivation.
