TeamLHBK from the University of Cambridge in the UK has been named the winner of the sixth annual ULI Hines Student Competition—Europe. The jury’s decision was announced by ULI and Hines, the global real estate investor, developer and manager, following a two-day in person final held at Hines’ European headquarters, “Grainhouse” in London. Six diverse multidisciplinary teams representing various universities and business schools from across the region participated in the competition final.

According to CBRE’s “North America Data Center Trends H2 2024" report, the overall vacancy rate in primary markets fell to a record-low 1.9 percent at year-end. Only a handful of facilities with 10 MW or more are slated for delivery in 2025 and are not yet leased, reflecting the scarcity of large-scale available inventory. Also from the report:Atlanta led all primary markets for net absorption in 2024 with 705.8 MW, well above perennial leader Northern Virginia’s 451.7 MW.

The Colorado Rockies moved to Coors Field in Denver’s Lower Downtown as a major league baseball expansion team in 1995. Often among the league leaders in attendance, the team has partnered with developers to generate revenue for maintaining and improving the field while also drawing activity downtown year-round.

Two of the three leading indicators for U.S. commercial real estate ended 2024 on an upbeat note, particularly on the lending and construction phase. The commercial real estate lending market saw significant growth in Q4, as capital reallocation and improving fundamentals fueled a spike in loan originations, according to CBRE.

Conversions of office buildings for residential uses are becoming increasingly viable in some regions. According to Steven Paynter, a principal at Gensler who leads the firm’s global building transformation and adaptive use practice, office-to-residential conversions are viable in 25–30 percent of the buildings his team analyzes.

Developers and casual visitors to Baltimore notice the eyesores that once-attractive houses—now empty and damaged—have become. The mismatch between discarded homes and the shortage of houses in the city, particularly for low-income households, frustrates housing advocates, city officials, and builders, as well as residents. Baltimore isn’t the only place facing such a challenge, though.
