It’s exciting times on the California grid, where more than 100% of midday electricity demand is being supplied by clean power. Accounting for curtailed solar generation, CAISO has produced enough clean power to meet more than 100% of midday electricity demand stretching back all the way to the beginning of April. On a system level, significant gas has to stay on midday because it's too inflexible to turn off and still get back up in time for the evening, as Brendan explains here.

US electricity generation is up, power sector emissions are down, and the grid is getting greener—and gassier. In 2022 the US burned more natural gas than ever, cut coal generation to post-Covid lows, and produced record amounts of zero-emissions electricity. US grid-scale energy storage reached almost 9GW and topped 25GWh by the end of 2022, up from less than 1GW/2GWh at the start of 2020. Developers commissioned a record 4GW/12GWh of batteries, totals that would have been higher but for supply chain snafus, Covid hangover, and volatile metals pricing. California and Texas remain the protagonists of grid-scale battery deployment.
