On a freezing night in January, several hundred people came to Boston’s Museum of Science for a town hall-style discussion cosponsored by Globe Ideas about how to strengthen science, democracy, and their ties to each other. It was a week and a half before President Trump returned to office, and his hostility toward scientific endeavors hung in the air. But his name was not uttered once by the panelists or by audience members who asked questions.

No one is more optimistic about technology than Ray Kurzweil. He is a computer scientist and inventor who has been predicting for decades that artificial intelligence will surpass human intelligence by 2029. Certainly the births of my children. Now on this short list is the total eclipse that my son and I caught for three minutes in Colebrook, N.H., on April 8.
