INTRODUCTION When firms enter new countries, they lack status as outsiders in new social networks (Carney and Dieleman, 2024). A new entrant's affiliations have a long-standing impact, as the first partnerships and initial network positions are known to affect a newcomer's opportunity in the market and subsequent performance (Hallen, 2008; Marquis, 2003; Milanov and Shepherd, 2013; Piazza et al., 2020; Stinchcombe, 1965; Wang, 2021).
