A settlement has been reached that should put the 2021 pandemic election results to bed once and for all. Cabinet minister John Abbott is stepping down from elected office. The parties involved in a tight race in St. John’s East-Quidi Vidi have reached a resolution. The NDP challenged the result in court years ago, alleging voting errors. As part of the resolution, Allison Coffin of the NDP, who lost to Abbott by 53 votes, agreed with withdraw the court challenge.

The first-degree murder trial for a St. Anthony man accused of killing his estranged wife remains on track following an appearance in Supreme Court this morning. It’s going on nine years since 38-year-old Jennifer Hillier-Penney disappeared from the town on the tip of the Northern Peninsula. And for more than seven of those years there was little if any sign of progress in the investigation, with no arrest or suspect identified.

A Hopedale man charged with the first-degree murder of one man and attempted murder of another remains in jail and without a lawyer three weeks after the tragic incident in the Labrador community. Twenty-seven-year-old Michael Tuglavina was arrested after one man was found dead in a home, and another was left with serious injuries nearby.

Equinor believes it has found a “path forward” to develop the Bay du Nord offshore oil megaproject. The Norwegian company’s Canadian boss relayed the news at the Energy NL conference in St. John’s this morning. It was two years ago that Equinor, during the same conference, stunned delegates with word that Bay Du Nord had stalled to due to cost increases. So it should come as no surprise that this new path forward is all about finding a cheaper, yet faster way to first oil by 2031.

The sentencing for an Ontario man linked to a so-called grandparents’ phone scam in this province has stalled in its tracks. Twenty-seven-year-old Charles Gillen has already pleaded guilty to 14 counts of fraud over $5,000 in connection with the crimes that saw seniors relieved of thousands of dollars. The scammers did their shady homework, targeting at least eight nans and pops in various jurisdictions, including Halifax and St. John’s.
