“Exciting.” “Unprecedented.” “Hopeful.” “Great.” These are some of the words that have been used to describe the CDC’s announcement last month that drug overdose deaths are in decline across the United States. In the midst of an opioid epidemic that has killed hundreds of thousands of Americans, the news was welcomed. But while many have been quick to celebrate, I believe it is too soon to celebrate. To start, we do not yet know the cause of the decline.

Let’s face it: America is not the healthiest country in the world. Life expectancy is falling, chronic diseases like diabetes and heart disease are soaring and our country is plagued by health inequities. In the wealthiest nation on Earth, American babies born today are expected to live shorter lives than their peers in other high-income countries. Despite spending more on health care than any other country, our outcomes lag behind. America can – and must – do better.
