When it was first suggested that we head to Rules Beach for a spot of Glamping, I had no idea of what to expect. To be honest, I’d never even heard of it. Rules Beach is nowhere near as well known as its neighbours Agnes Waters, 1770 and Bundaberg, which are all accessible within a 90-minute drive. But that is about to change as word spreads about this unspoilt coastal destination in Queensland’s Gladstone region, which is yet another gateway to the stunning South Barrier Reef.

Des had on these brand-new white leather Footjoy shoes. Footjoy, for male golfers, is kind of like Christian Louboutin, for fashion conscious females. Anyway, Des says that he is 80 years old. I don’t believe him because he looks super fit, has an amazingly positive attitude to life, and still hits the ball more than 180 metres off the tee.

How long would you wait for someone who is late for an appointment? Does the time differ if you are waiting for a friend, versus waiting for a salesperson? My golf buddy Jim bought a new car last week. A Mercedes, an expensive car. He’d done all his research. He knew what he wanted, called the dealership, and was told that he had to make an appointment to book a test drive. He had no issue with that. It makes perfect sense.

Why do we feel the need to pay sportspeople so much money? The pay levels for people who have an innate ability to hit a golf ball, or kick a football, seem entirely out of kilter to what they are truly worth. Think about it for a second. Footballers, who rarely have more than a high school education, earn more than surgeons who save lives. It’s absurd.

Well, it seems that one in six of us either don’t think they need it or simply can’t afford it. A survey of 1000 people conducted by Quantum Market Research on behalf of the Insurance Council of Australia and Smartraveller found that 16 per cent of us now were travelling without any insurance coverage. The key findings of the survey showed that:Younger travellers (under 30) were most likely to travel without insurance (60 per cent).

My brother arrived back in Australia last month from Canada where he’s been living for the past six years. He’s on a 40-day holiday that’s taking him from Sydney to Phillip Island, Traralgon, Albion Park and the Gold Coast travelling by car along the gorgeous and dramatic east coast of Australia. At 68, he’s calling it his farewell tour. “This is it. I won’t be back. It’s too far to travel,’’ he announced in a very matter-of-fact way.

I started watching The Gentlemen on Netflix this week. It’s yet another Guy Ritchie cockney mob thriller that explores the dark side of British life. It’s violent. Its characters are loud and larger than life. And it’s very very funny in parts. If you liked Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels, Sherlock Holmes and Snatch you will adore Mr Ritchie’s latest creation. Fans love the fact that Ritchie never strays far from his comfort zone – gangsters and drugs.

It looks like America is going to become a little less woke in 2025. The term woke is already extremely divisive. There’s no doubt that when the term was introduced to our vocabularies it was a good thing. First coined in the 1940s in America, it simply referred to someone who was well-informed on issues of social justice – particularly racial issues. Now, for some generations, calling a person woke is an insult. For others, it is high praise. There’s not a lot of middle ground to be found.

I hit the road last week in an RV. A recreational vehicle. It was a giant 7.5 metre six-berth RV that I hired from Star RV for a three-day trip from my Gold Coast home to Yamba and Byron Bay. I loaded my phone with a year’s worth of Country Music playlists, channelled Clint Eastwood as Philoe Beddoe from Every Which Way But Loose and put the hammer down as I motored south on the M1. It wasn’t my first RV rodeo. I travelled around New Zealand’s South Island many years ago and thankfully survived.
