    14 1/1 It was a glorious day for an outing and Fermanagh Grassland Club members enjoyed visits to two great farms in the Strabane area on Tuesday, April 29, writes William Johnston, Secretary. The customary morning visit was to the dairy farm of Hall and Peter Donnell at Ballymagorry where the herd of 110 cows are milked with two GEA robots. The herd averages 10,400 litres per cow with an average annual concentrate use of 2.6 tonnes.

    There has been widespread criticism of the proposed new programme, with the Ulster Farmers Union (UFU) saying the proposals could devastate local farms. “According to DAERA, around 3,500 farms will now be forced to meet strict new phosphorus limits. “For many, this could mean finding more land for slurry spreading or cutting livestock numbers. “This is a backdoor attempt to shrink herds and flocks which the UFU says is completely unacceptable” said a UFU spokesperson.
