SLAMDANCE Film Festival 2025 –There’s plenty about Portal to Hell for horror fans to enjoy. It’s a clever twist on the old Faustian bargain. It also co-stars genre legend Keith David (They Live, The Thing), who plays Mr. Bobshank, the wise mentor and neighbor to the film’s protagonist, Dunn (Trey Holland), a medical debt collector. Dunn makes a gamble with a demon named Chip to save Mr. Bobshank’s life, but it comes at a steep cost. He must sacrifice three souls.

Natalie Erika James made a name for herself with the stellar, slow-burn horror movie Relic from 2020. Her latest feature, Apartment 7A, is a prequel to Rosemary’s Baby. While crafting a prequel to Ira Levin’s novel and Roman Polanski’s influential adaptation would seem like an insurmountable task, James, and her co-writers, Christian White and Skylar James, do quite a good job.

Stuart Ortiz made a name for himself in the horror genre with the Grave Encounters found footage films. His latest work, Strange Harvest: Occult Murder in the Inland Empire, uses a faux documentary story to detail brutal and grisly murders, committed by a mysterious killer named Mr. Shiny. While the film certainly has shock value, as crime scene images flash across the screen, Ortiz’s latest is a clever commentary on the culture’s obsession with true crime.
