The U.S. Department of Education’s Office for Civil Rights (OCR) opened a formal investigation into allegations of antisemitic harassment at California State Polytechnic University, Humboldt (Cal Poly Humboldt) on May 20. The probe follows a Title VI complaint filed in March by the Louis D. Brandeis Center for Human Rights Under Law and Jewish on Campus.

Israeli singer Yuval Raphael placed second in the 2025 Eurovision Song Contest, held May 17 in Basel, Switzerland. Her song, “New Day Will Rise,” is an operatic pop ballad with a music video that references concertgoers fleeing the Hamas attacks on the Nova Music Festival. She herself survived the Oct. 7, 2023 festival massacre, where she hid in a bomb shelter for eight hours. Following her father’s advice over the phone, she played dead. Of the roughly 50 people in the shelter, only 11 survived.

When the Eurovision Song contest finals take place on Saturday, May 17 in Basel, Switzerland, Israel’s contestant Yuval Raphael will take the stage with high hopes and intense scrutiny. It’s a moment that would have been unthinkable 19 months ago, when Raphael was nearly murdered on the darkest day in Israel’s modern history. Raphael, then age 22, attended the Nova Music Festival on Oct. 7, 2023.

It was over 100 degrees in Fresno during the 2018 shoot for “Dirty Bomb,” a Holocaust film that takes place in the winter. Actor Ido Samuel, dressed as a prisoner at a concentration camp, had been sustaining himself on just one small salad per day for a week. The short film followed Jewish prisoners forced to build Nazi V-2 rockets in the Mittelbau-Dora concentration camp. The production had no trailers, no air conditioning, and not much of a budget. Samuel didn’t care.
