“We’re hitting our stride now,” said Ashley Torres, one of Ulster County’s Election Commissioners at 11 a.m. Tuesday, October 29. “Day four, of early voting and we’re already breaking records for turnout for early voting.” At that point Torres said that 13,930 Ulster County voters has cast their ballots at one of the six early voting centers. Asked if she believed that the presidential race was responsible for the large numbers, Torres was unequivocal.

U.S. Representative Pat Ryan, a Gardiner resident, is no stranger to the electoral process. On November 5, he’ll face the voters of the 18th Congressional District in what will be his sixth run for office since 2018. Those elections included a Democratic congressional primary, a special election for Ulster County executive, followed in the same year by a general election for county executive.

Proposal Number One, also known as the New York Equal Rights Amendment, is the only statewide proposition to appear on the back of every ballot with voting beginning on October 26 and leading up to election day, November 5. Ulster County has proposed two amendments to the county charter regarding personnel and how appointments are made. Naturally, all Ulster County residents will see this one on the back of your ballots.

For 30 years the building had been crumbling. The famous 1992 Dragon Inn fire nearly destroyed the once glorious 1882 Queen Ann style mansion known as Clovelea, at 134 Burt Street (Route 9W) in Saugerties. The blaze ripped through the kitchen of the restaurant and rendered the structure a derelict. Multiple owners seeking various uses for the prime property came and went.
