The $550 million local and state makeover of Alamo Plaza reached another milestone on Wednesday—a topping out ceremony for the new Texas Cavalier's Education Center. Texas Land Commissioner Dawn Buckingham joined local dignitaries, and school students at the ceremony to sign a giant beam before it was lifted into place to complete the skeletal frame for the building.

The local housing market is showing signs of becoming more buyer friendly, according to figures this week from the San Antonio Board of Realtors. Home sales dropped a modest one percent in April compared to the same month of 2024. Median home prices dropped 3% to $304,000 in the same comparison. And inventory or the number of homes available for purchase rose too.

Bexar County commissioners honored fallen county law enforcement officers on Tuesday. The Officer Down Memorial website reports there have been 18 line of duty deaths among the ranks of county law enforcement during its history. The most recent was 56-year-old Deputy Ronald Rudy Butler who contracted COVID-19 while on the job and died in September 2021. Commissioners approved a proclamation to honor those officers and recognize National Police Week and Peace Officers Memorial Day on Thursday.

San Antonians will need to continue to find ways to remain cool as a heat wave is now expected to sizzle until at least Sunday. An icy paleta under the shade of a giant Texas live oak may not be enough. Indoor air conditioning with a giant Texas tea sounds better. Precautions are definitely needed to prevent heat-related illnesses, especially among vulnerable groups. San Antonio broke the record high on Tuesday at exactly 3:47 p.m. when the temperature hit 103.
