The sound of breaking glass awoke Frank Morris in the early hours of Dec. 10, 1964, at his shoe repair shop - one of the few thriving Black-owned businesses in the eastern Louisiana town of Ferriday, near the Mississippi River. A gang of suspected Ku Klux Klan members stormed the one-story building and splashed gasoline over the workbenches and on Morris. A match was lit. The 51-year-old Morris ran out the back door of Frank’s Shoe Service, where he lived in a spare room.

Frederick Forsyth, a mega-selling British novelist of political thrillers, cunning spy craft and globe-trotting intrigue who used his own background as a foreign correspondent to inspire such page-turners as “The Day of the Jackal,” “The Odessa File” and “The Dogs of War,” died June 9 at his home in Buckinghamshire, a county in southeast England. He was 86. The literary agency Curtis Brown, which represented him, announced the death but did not cite a cause.
