Our usual round-up of local news includes a consultation which could help create more stops for the X34 in the Ilsleys, an important survey about the Downlands Leisure Centre, young people urged to get involved in the discussions about the development of the Pirbright site and a hare-coursing consultation – plus Easter events, surgeries, libraries, a triathlon, flooding and the food bank. See also below for community notices and news from your local council.

Most of the councils in the area we cover are single-tier with one municipal authority. The arrangements in Oxfordshire are (currently, at least) different, with a County Council which is sub-divided into six district councils, of which the Vale of White Horse is one. In these two-tier authorities, the county and district have different responsibilities. In all cases, parish and town councils provide the first and most immediately accessible tier of local government.

The Parish Council team has changed slightly over the last year. Councillor Peter Smith has moved out of the village and the Clerk, Gillian Woodward, has retired. Huge thanks to them both for their dedication and hard work over the last few years. We are delighted to welcome a new councillor, Stephen Reschwamm, and new Clark, Liz James. They are both already proving to be a great asset to the team.

These by-elections were caused by the resignation of former West Berkshire Council (WBC) and Thatcham Town Council (TTC) Councillor Lee Dillon last month, following his election as MP for the Newbury constituency in the July 2024 general election. Five candidates are standing in the WBC by-election and four in the TTC one. We asked each group the same questions (some, though not all, are common to both). Their answers can be seen below, arranged in each case alphabetically by surname.
