Forensic vs. TransformativeAgainst the apocalyptic interpretation, I will argue that justification is forensic instead of being transformative. This article is part of the Distinctive Theology series. The Gospel in GalatiansOne way to think about Galatians is to sketch it in three movements. These three movements roughly map onto chapters so that chapters 1–2 are the first movement, chapters 3–4 the second, and chapters 5–6 the third. The three movements can be described as the 1) the truth of the gospel (chs. 1–2); 2) the content of the gospel (chs. 3–4); and 3) the result of the gospel (chs. 5–6).

Be YourselfOn a recent visit to IKEA, the labyrinthine Swedish furniture megastore, I was greeted with a message repeated twelve times on the entrance staircase: “Be yourself.” Knowing who you are and being true to yourself has never been more important than in the twenty-first century West. They are seen as signs of good mental health and well-being and the keys to authentic living and true happiness. Of course, to be yourself, you must know yourself.

Christians are known as “people of the book” because of their commitment to the Bible. One of the first things missionaries did when they reached a new culture was teach people to read. While reading the Bible is our priority, anyone who has read it knows that the biblical writers read things other than the Scriptures. They read the literature of their time.

The Problem of the Christian SelfIn an age when countless people are struggling to understand their identity, Christians frequently tell one another, “Your identity is in Christ.” This statement is often issued in attempts to swiftly tranquilize anxiety when someone expresses uncertainty over place and purpose in life: Who am I? Do I belong? How do I find security? What is my purpose? Yet in many such cases, the adage does little to assuage unwelcome feelings of bewilderment.
