U.S. electricity consumption is expected to increase by as much as 15% by 2050. The electric power space continues to evolve as demand increases (largely driven by technology and manufacturing), generation moves to renewable energy sources and transportation increasingly uses electric power. Investment opportunities span a wide spectrum — from supply to demand and utility scale to behind the meter — across which there are thousands of lower-middle-market firms operating.

The third quarter 2024 CIRT Sentiment Index declined, indicating respondents are less optimistic about future opportunities. The overall index score fell to 62.6 from 67.0 in the prior quarter. The third quarter Design Index also retreated, dropping to 66.3 from 71.1.  This quarter, members were asked questions about margin pressures, anticipated cost volatility through the remainder of 2024 and their expectations for 2025, and labor productivity.

As a CEO, one thing you quickly find out is that you cannot talk to other CEOs about your weaknesses, even if you doubt yourself. I’m not really one for reflection. I prefer to look ahead, plan out things and focus on the future. So when I was asked to attend FMI’s recent CEO Forum and speak about my time as the CEO of an engineering firm, I hesitated because I do not live in the past.

The second quarter 2024 CIRT Sentiment Index shows continued and improving optimism. The overall index score rose to 67.0 from 64.9 in the first quarter. The second quarter Design Index retreated somewhat, falling to 71.1 from 74.3 This quarter, members were asked questions regarding their firms’ adoption of a companywide health and wellness culture as well as their top priorities for managing talent in 2024.
