Most of the Cabinet appointments of the incoming Lai Ching-te administration in Taiwan have been announced in the last week. Despite Taiwanese media initially expecting that most positions would be announced at once, the announcements largely took place in stages. This seemed to be because some appointments were not confirmed at the time that the initial slate was announced. Lai’s choice of premier and vice premier were the subject of much interest in Taiwanese reporting.

On January 13, Lai Ching-te is set to become president of Taiwan, marking the first time that the Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) has won the post for a third consecutive term. Latest opinion polls give him about 38 per cent of the vote, against 33 per cent for Hou Yu-ih of the Kuomintang and 20 per cent for Ko Wen-je of the Taiwan People’s Party. In Taiwan, the winner does not require more than 50 per cent of votes, only the largest number.

In their 2019 election manifesto, the British Conservative Party promised to cut annual immigration to less than 220,000 a year. In May 2023, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak promised to reduce it to below 500,000 a year. It would be no understatement to say that our city is in the midst of a serious mental health crisis. Suicide numbers amongst the youth of this city have almost doubled in less than a decade, to a record high – that’s a headline taken from September this year. Bearing the brunt of the crisis are our youth, aged 18 to 25 years old. Over 8% of Hong Kong secondary school students had had suicidal thoughts in the past year, as a survey revealed.

In 2019, 11 million Chinese visited Thailand, the largest group in the country’s most important industry. But this year the number will only reach 3.5 million – it has set off alarm bells within the government. To turn the tide, in September it announced a five-month visa-free period for visitors from China – as well as India, Russia, India, Taiwan and Kazakhstan – more flights and simpler arrival procedures at airport.
