Have you ever had one of those moments when the place you are in seems to sum up everything about who you are and what you most love doing in the world? When you get to think, right now, this is my heaven. I wouldn't change a thing. Mine happened on a family holiday to Vancouver Island and it went like this. I was sitting in a camping chair by a firepit on a beach watching sunset fade over the Pacific Ocean.

During lockdown, when my son was 12, it was a daily fight to get him off his PlayStation to exercise. Now he’s a strapping 16-year-old who works out every night with heavy weights in his bedroom and I am worrying that he is doing too much. Over the past few months he has become quite beefy, and some of his friends look as though they could be contenders for Love Island.

I had my first child in 2011, and like most first-time mothers I was clueless. So I bought many baby books. The one out of the five that I read that looked most helpful was The Contented Little Baby Book by Gina Ford. I looked at the lists and the timetables and thought, this is for me. The other books, with their encouragement to “go with the flow”, were anathema. Sorry, my spice rack is alphabetised but you want to me to go with the flow? There was more.

I am sitting in a circle in an east London library with my two-year-old son singing, “I see you! I see you and your little tiny nose! Peekaboo!” We are a group of 15 mothers and toddlers and we have to sing this to every child, so it’s really going on a bit. I am wondering if any other women in the room (yup, no men here) are finding this as tedious as I am.

You’d have to be a curmudgeonly character not to enjoy an Alpine hotel in winter. Who doesn’t love a snuggly interior lined in wood and natural stone, with a crackling log fire at its heart, or hunkering down on soft felt sofas littered with puffy cushions for a post-ski snooze? Or savouring hot chocolate and strudel after playing in the snow? Even better: who doesn’t dream of having the whole place to themselves, to do precisely what you want, when you want, and without strangers eyeballing you?

‘Mum, I am being eaten alive by mosquitoes”; “It’s soo hot, are we nearly there?”; “When are we going back to the hotel?” You’d think I am marching my teenage sons through the Darien Gap the way they are complaining. In fact, we are walking a flat, leafy five-mile trail through a forested nature reserve in Mauritius. While they moan, I am tuning out to the cooing of grey Mauritian sparrows in the branches and admiring shafts of sunlight streaming down between mahogany trees.

I love walking, but rarely make time for it, so my husband and I came up with the pledge that every year on our wedding anniversary we’d take the day off, go for a big walk and spend a night somewhere lovely. For our first trip we embarked on a seven-mile circuit through the South Downs, then stayed in a cosy village pub called the Lamb, in Angmering. We returned to London feeling renewed and reconnected, and extremely pleased with our new tradition. That was eight years ago.

I have a backpack sitting by my front door that contains nothing but two slim metal plates that each weigh 5kg. Twice a week I strap it on and stride off around the park for 25 minutes. The backpack doesn’t feel excessively heavy but it certainly makes a walk more challenging. I return home with my shoulders pulled back, my core, thighs and bum worked and my heart pumping. So, yes, you could say I am a rucker. Haven’t heard of rucking yet? It’s time to catch up.
