Virginia’s sixth district congressman, Ben Cline, is cosponsoring a bill to terminate the Department of Education, even as President Donald Trump threatens to sign an executive order to dismantle it. Cline is one of 31 House Republicans who have signed on to cosponsor bill 899, which consists of one edict: to terminate the Department of Education by December 31, 2026.

It was an attempt to sway county officials to help fund door-to-door public transportation county-wide. WMRA’s Bridget Manley reports. It was a busy morning at Central High School in Shenandoah County on election day as voters made their way to the polls. WMRA’s Bridget Manley reports. Voters on both sides of the aisle were jovial as they cast their ballots Tuesday morning. Republican and Democrat volunteers outside the precinct said voters seemed excited to participate. Tara Nelson voted for Kamala Harris. Neither a Democrat nor a Republican, Nelson says she has consistently voted for the candidate, rather than the party.

Democrat Ken Mitchell is aiming to flip a deeply Republican U.S. House seat in western Virginia by running a campaign focused on bipartisanship and civility. Mitchell, a veteran and part-time farmer from Rockingham County, is running against Republican incumbent Rep. Ben Cline, who is seeking to represent the commonwealth’s 6th District for a fourth term.

Three Democrats and one independent candidate are vying for three open seats on the five-person Harrisonburg City Council in November. After a decade-long tenure on the board, Chris Jones lost his primary bid in June. Harrisonburg Mayor Deanna Reed, Vice Mayor Laura Dent and newcomer Nasser Alsaadun advanced out of the Democratic contest. (The mayor and vice mayor roles are selected by council from among members of the panel.) They join independent candidate Javier Calleja on the November ballot.
