Seventy-five years ago, on 1 October 1949, Chinese Communist Party (CCP) chairman Mao Zedong stood before a bank of microphones on the balcony of the Gate of Heavenly Peace overlooking Beijing's Tiananmen Square and proclaimed the birth of the People's Republic of China (PRC). Mao's China was the China of revolution.
