This all started with a dream – or more like a nightmare. Picture my wife and I plus two young boys with questionable testosterone levels and a kitty-cat, all living in a two- bedroom apartment without a blade of grass to gaze upon. Yep, we had to move but, with a flurry of activity on the market at the time, it wasn’t going to be easy. But this 1980s Palm Springs-ish home turned plenty of buyers away when they saw how much work needed to be done.

Style of home: A 1970s Spanish mission/Mediterranean-style home in a northern Sydney suburb with a reserve nearby. Timeline: The family bought the house in September 2013 and engaged MCK Architects in February 2016. They moved out in April 2017 so the renovation could start, and were back in by December 2019.

When passionate gardeners Treska and Dave James found themselves in a newly built house on the South Coast of New South Wales, complete with shiny new furnishings and a lawn "manicured to within an inch of its life", they had an overwhelming sense that something was missing. "We built a massive home on a postage-stamp block," says Dave, who, along with Treska, works as a public servant and commutes to Sydney part-time.

Now, after undergoing an extensive but sensitive renovation, it's ready to usher in a whole new era as a light-filled, comfortable family home. Its new owners – just the fourth in the home's long history – have their own connection to Durras. Sarah and Geoff first bought property in the town, the traditional lands of the Yuin people, in 1987.

Here's the puzzle: two large camphor laurel trees, a number of mature golden cane palms, a sloping lawn, a too-small entertaining area, and a busy family with four kids. Homeowner Courtenay and her husband had moved in over a decade ago with two small children, but their family had expanded and they wanted to spend more time at home. A pool was at the top of their list, along with improving the usability of the garden to allow for more friends and fun.

Affectionate, intelligent, playful: these aren't characteristics typically associated with donkeys, but Susie Corlett, owner of Rocky Hill Miniature Donkey Stud in Dungog, New South Wales, says the equine animals are just misunderstood. "Sometimes you go into the paddock and they throw themselves at your feet and demand to be cuddled," she says, laughing.
