Regional fire resources gather to prepare for fire season

Experts were able to share a preview of what's expected from this fire season and discuss new technologies. CALIFORNIA – The California Department of Fish and Wildlife is moving their Wolf Conservation Plan into Phase 2. As outlined in the 2016 Wolf conservation plan, Phase 2 can be achieved when there are at least 5 breeding pairs made up of at least 2 adults that have pups that survive for two years. As of 2024, 5 of the 7 California wolf packs qualify as a breeding pair, but there are 4 other areas of known wolf activity.
Senior project starts 23 years Sparrow Clubs legacy at SMHS

MEDFORD, Ore. – In 2002, Rob Brown selected his senior project to be on charitable giving. He chose to focus on Sparrow Clubs, a non-profit organization that supports children with medical needs. Sparrow Clubs had infrastructure in place to create programs at schools to sponsor and support Sparrows. Brown sponsored a baby boy named Tanner Ulrey, who had a rare form of cancer.
Scenic Middle School raises $1,500 for Sparrow through physical challenge

CENTRAL POINT, Ore. – The leadership class at Scenic Middle School took on a physical challenge to support their Sparrow, Everleigh. These students work each semester to donate 300 hours of their time volunteering to get money to put toward their Sparrow’s medical expenses. Many of these students have created a bond with Everleigh, viewing her as one of their own younger siblings. “ I love her,” said Cienna, a seventh-grade student.
Oregon Senate passes wildfire hazard map repeal

SALEM, Ore. – Senate Bill 83, which seeks to repeal the controversial wildfire hazard map and the related regulations, advanced today after a unanimous vote in the Senate Committee on Natural Resources and Wildfire. The wildfire hazard map, first introduced through 2021’s Senate Bill 762, categorized regions based on wildfire risk and imposed property maintenance rules on higher-hazard areas.

The fair offered a cancer screening, medical and housing connections, and other local resources. “We usually see between 2,000-3,000 seniors come. ODOT offers online open house for Gold Hill bridge over Rogue River

GOLD HILL, Ore. – ODOT is improving the 98-year-old bridge that crosses the Rogue River in Gold Hill. The 1927 bridge is famous for it’s beauty and recreational opportunities. The bridge services many pedestrians and vehicles between Gold Hill and a mobile home park. To remain operational, the bridge needs repairs. ODOT has made plans to widen the 20’ wide bridge deck to 24’ wide.

BROOKINGS, Ore. – Brookings Police Department is adding to its K9 squad. The latest duo: Officer Krause and K9 Betts. Brookings PD was in need of new vehicles for their K9 squad. According to Curry County Comissioner Patrick Hollinger, the Sheriff’s office recently ended their K9 program. Brooking PD reached out to the county to see if they could borrow two of the unused K9 cars and purchase two of the Durangos used for patrol.
